With increasing awareness about air quality these days, building owners and managers are expected to provide clean, comfortable and healthy air to building occupants and users. Where concerns or questions arise about the air quality in a commercial or institutional facility it is often useful to have the air checked, preferably by an independent, competent professional. In office and office-like settings air monitoring is performed throughout a period of time to gather data on air quality. A special instrument is used to monitor parameters such as:
- Carbon dioxide: building occupants exhale this gas. It is removed from spaces and replaced with fresh air by ventilation systems.
- Carbon monoxide: from combustion sources like furnaces, burning and vehicle exhaust.
- Relative humidity: this parameter can be used as a gauge of comfort in an occupied space.
- Temperature: another indicator of comfort in a space.
- Volatile organic compounds (VOC’s): these vapours can be given off by carpeting, furniture, finishing’s, personal scent products as well as others.
